Ask A Mate began with a powerful mission: to give young Australian men a safe, judgment-free space to seek advice about relationships, consent, and domestic or sexual violence. Created in partnership with Beyond DV, one of Australia’s leading charities working to build a future free from domestic violence, the project was born from a simple insight: young people want to ask questions, they just need a trusted place to do it. Beyond DV saw an opportunity to reach young men earlier, support them proactively, and prevent harm before it occurs, but achieving this required a digital experience built around privacy, trust, and human connection.

The Challenge: A Safe and Approachable Platform

The challenge was clear. Young men often turn to the internet with deeply personal questions, but the information they find is inconsistent, unsafe, or impersonal. Ask A Mate needed to feel approachable and empathetic, offering expert guidance from respected community members in a way that felt safe, anonymous, and supportive. The platform also had to work seamlessly as a mobile app while reaching audiences through a public website to raise awareness and extend its impact.

Moonward collaborated closely with Beyond DV to bring Ask A Mate to life as a complete, end-to-end product. We created the brand identity, tone of voice, and visual language to make the platform feel friendly and approachable without compromising the seriousness of the topic. We designed the user experience and interface to prioritise privacy and emotional safety, then built the mobile app so young men could submit questions anonymously and access reliable guidance. Simultaneously, we developed the public website.
