Understanding the Challenge
I Can Read needed a digital product that could transform their trusted phonics programme into an intuitive mobile experience for children as young as two - one that felt playful while still delivering real educational outcomes. The platform needed AI voice-recognition for independent pronunciation practice, clear progress visibility for parents, and the flexibility to scale across regions, languages, and diverse learning environments. In short, they weren’t just building an app; they needed a complete digital learning ecosystem.
I’ve had the absolute pleasure of working with Moonward from the design phase all the way through to the beginning of our I Can Read preliminary phase. Moonward has designed an app that was so in line with what I Can Read needed. Their ability to listen and understand exactly what we needed made Moonward the perfect fit for our company.

We approached the challenge by placing the learner at the centre. The new I Can Read app delivers bite-sized lessons, bright visual cues, gentle animations, and structured but playful progression. Every interaction was designed to feel rewarding and achievable. To maintain educational integrity, each lesson aligns with I Can Read’s synthetic phonics framework - guiding children from foundational sounds to more advanced reading concepts. And to make the experience truly interactive, we built the AI-powered voice recognition system , allowing learners to speak into the app and receive real-time feedback on pronunciation. This feature bridges the gap between classroom and home learning, helping children practise safely and independently.
